These are key commands I find I use a lot when prepping projects for Lustre in Flame/Smoke 2013 AE and later.  I’ve also included notes on conforming and rendering, so if you’re new to Flame or Smoke and need to get a project ready for grading, this guide should include most of the things you need.

Ripple vs Sync
-When Trim Tools are Red: Trimming will maintain Video-Audio Sync.
-When Trim Tools are Yellow: Trimming will cause timeline to ripple.

Select: A

Slide KyFm:Shift+S

Display In/ Out Monitors When Trimming
Trim View: Ctrl+4

Keyboard Trimming
-Click Transition Point
-Hold Shift+D, Use Up-Down Arrows to move edit

Adding Transitions
-Set Positioner over target track.
-Use mouse to click target edit point.
-You can also use Up-Down arrows to go to an edit point, however you’ll need to verify no individual clips are selected.
If they are, you will not be able to add a transition.
-Click Transition Button next to FX button.
-Select Transition Type

-Choose number of Frames if needed. (Default is 10)
-Use Editor to make fine adjustments.
-You can also drag the ends of the transition itself in the timeline to adjust it’s length.

To Add a Transition to a Single Tranck Quickly:
Hover positioned over, or click on, edit point.
Command+T: Add Transition.

To Add a Transition to All Tracks (video+audio) Quickly:
Command+Shift+T: Add Transition to all tracks.

To Remove a Transition:
Select it, then click delete.


Show Media Panel: Shift+Esc (or Crtl+Swipe Left/Right)
Show Desktop: ~  (or Swipe Left/Right)

Go To:
Media Hub: Space+F1
Conform: Space+F2
Timeline: Space+F3
Batch: Space+F4
Tools: Space+F5

1) Create New Library for Incoming Media
-Right-Click Anywhere Under Workspace Library
-Select New > Library.

2) Create New Folder in that Library for Conformed Sequence
-Right-Click Your New Library
-Select New > Folder.

3) Right-Click Main Area of Media Hub
-Select Sequence File Type (FCP XML, AAF, EDL)
Media Import Window Appears

4) Navigate to, and Highlight, your Sequence File

5) Under Sequence Import Options Tab (Required for FCP XML)
-Aspect Ratio
-Bit Depth
-Progressive or Interlaced
-Use Filename
-Use Timecode

6) Under Format Specific Options Tab
-Format (Optional)
-Frame Rate (Optional)

7) Under General Tab
Cache Source Media Selected
Hard Imports Project Media to Framestore (‘Managed’)
Cache Source Media Un-Selected
Soft-Links to Project Media in its Current Location (‘Unmanaged’)
Note: Soft-Linked Media can be Consolidated (with handles) to Framestore later to optimize space use. (See Consolidate Timeline For Grading, Below)

8) Match Clips using Sequence Metadata (Timecode, Filename, Resolution, Etc)
Clip Status
-Red Exclamation: No Match-Media Not Linked
-Yellow Box: Found Multiple Matches-Media Not Yet Linked
-Green Check: Found Match-Media Linked

Note: Flame initially searches for media in the same folders your Sequence File was in.

If you do not have an immediate link (Red Outlines on Clips)
On Center Option Bar
Set Search Location:
-Set New Search location for project media files.
-Select Scan Sub-directories if needed.
-Make sure to click Set when done.

Match Criteria: Set Metadata search criteria (Timecode, Filename, etc)
Link Matched Sources: Link all media with positive matches.
Hide Linked:  Hide all media with positive matches.

Linking Clips Manually:
-Select Clip in Media Library.  Use Player To Scrub and Verify Clip.
-Right-Click Correct Entry in Event List > Link to [filename].

Once all clips have matches conform is complete.

To Toggle Player/ Conform Area: Press ESC.

Unlinking Media In Timeline:
-Select single clip: Click
-Select multiple clips: Ctrl+Click

To Unlink Media: Right-Click Selected Clips > Media > Unlink. Confirm.

To Link R3D Files:
In Conform Tab Option Bar: Set New Search Location

Under Format Specific Options Tab
-Format (R3D) or Select an R3D Clip to load R3D format options.
-Click Metadata Menu
Choose: De-bayering

Debayer Mode: Half-Good, Quarter, Etc
Bit-Depth: 16-Bit (to contain 14-Bits of R3D Data)
Click Set when done.


1) Duplicate/Copy Reel: Alt+Shift+Drag
2) Rename Reel: N

Drag Reel to Timeline to create new Seq Tab.

3) Select All Seq Segments: CTRL_A
4) Right-Click, Commit > Consolidate Handles
5) Enter number of frames to keep in handles (24) in Calculator Pop-up.
6) Create a new library… “For_Grading”
7) Inside that library, place a folder for the session… “Grading1”
8) Drag a copy of your Sequence to be graded into the Grading1 session folder.

9) Save the Flame Project: CTRL+S
10) Exit Flame: Shift+Insert

(After rendering a final timeline in Lustre)

Launch Flame
-Navigate to Lustre Shared Library
-Navigate to Render Folder.
In Render folder will be clips and your render sequence.
-Drag render sequence to Desktop to view.
-All effects from original edit will be re-applied.
-Continue finishing and do final output in Flame.
